ABIAKUM MACBETH Teamwork: The Gifts of the Holy Spirit Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-12
Introduction:Teamwork,
as the word implies refers to work that is done by a team; it’s a collection of
individuals with different skills and abilities working together to achieve a
common goal.
Teamwork for example could be best illustrated in a game of
football where 22 healthy men or women compete for victory. In a game of
football, if a team must win, that team has to score more goals than it concede.
Some coaches prefer to either play the defensive or attacking styles. Three
sets of players are involved in the game of football.
Defenders:
Stop the opponents from scoring goals, and the Goal Keeper who keeps the goal post and prevents the ball from
entering the net
Midfielders:
Assist the defenders and also act as supporting strikers
Strikers:
Their major role is to score goals.
Coach:
He chooses, train and coordinates the players
Though
the team plays as a single unit, each player occupies a position and has just
one role; which is to help his or her team score more goals and concede less.
If a player is not performing his role or occupying his position, the opponent
can take advantage of the lapses to secure the victory.
This
same principle of teamwork is applicable in continuing the works that Jesus
committed to his disciples. . (Acts 1:1)From the bible passage we read, we see
that though the gifts are diverse, different in administration and operation,
there are meant to profit the body of Christ.Jesus Christ commissions his
disciples to go and continue the work he already started. Mark 16:15, Matt 28:
19. Jesus never left them alone, rather he committed them into the hands of the
Holy Spirit, who is to coach, train, guide, comfort, and empower them with all
the requisite skills they need to gain victory. John 14: 16-18
Thus,
just as we have in a football team, the gifts of the spirit which believers must not be ignorant of can
be grouped into three categories:
1
Revelation
Gifts: Word of wisdom> insight into the
Divine Will and purpose to solve perplexing problems, Word of knowledge>
Insight to the Divine mind, will or plan, Discerning of spirits> insight
into the realm of the spirit and to read the minds of men
2 Power
Gifts: Faith> to believe God without any
doubt and to create things into being, Gift of healing,>Healing all manner
of sicknesses and diseases without any medicine or human intervention Working
of miracles>Acts of God necessary to change a natural course.
3
Inspiration
or Vocal Gifts: Speaking in tongues,
Interpretation of tongues, Prophecy
Coach
is the Holy Spirit, Club Owner God the Father, Shareholder God the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit
In
our bible text, we see the Holy Spirit giving to believers the gift that each
of them need to form a formidable team that can defeat the opponent. Without
this tool, the disciples are helpless and they can’t do anything of their own
to win any victory.
Thus,
for the church today to succeed like the early church, then this type of team
is necessary in any church: Goal keeper and the defenders, the mid-fielders and
the strikers as represented by the gifts mentioned above.
A
church that does not have the Holy Spirit to coach, train, guide and empower
these calibers of disciples can’t effectively do the work the Christ has
committed into her hands. I will build my church … the gates of hell will not
prevail.
People
will not hear when there is no preacher, they will not believe if they are no
signs and wonders. Without faith, they can’t please God etc.
Thus,
any church that is not growing lacks the tools that are needed for its growth
and progress. The Word of Wisdom or Knowledge alone can’t deliver the victory.
Just as teamwork is essential to winning any football match, all these gifts of
the Holy Spirit are needed to score the victory. The Holy Spirit is looking for
people who are trainable, teachable and coachable to groom for this end time
church.
How many are ready to used and for which position?
I
am currently looking for just 8 others who can join me for us to make up this
formidable team that can deliver the necessary victory unto the church of God
